from upccoming LP "I Bet You Thought Today Was Gonna Be A Pretty Good Day"
"Welcome back. Where do we stand?"
"Hey thanks it's so great to see you again.
I'm not sure there's a queue forming by the provost's garden
You know where we'd go to take exams?"
We disappeared from each other.
We disappeared from our friends.
We hid out in our respective hometowns.
Only to resurface when this beast reared its head.
I slept through our graduation
Closed my eyes through the whole procession.
I heard them call your name.
I felt your pupils search my necks nape.
"Where do we stand?"
Is not such a metaphor to you as is me
And I am reminded of the night I placed my palms face down on your knees.
And you grasped my elbows followed every vein and artery.
And we brushed lips.
Took a step too fast and disjointedly quit.
I slept through our graduation.
Forgot I was there to accept qualifications
Feels like I've been through one hibernation
Traded a year's worth of happiness and expectations.
Honestly, I don't know where we stand
You asked me never to speak of us again.
You wish we were sober and I wish we were remotely friends.
We're each having trouble coming to terms with never seeing each other again.
I just hope you think of me the way that I do you
Up late at night hoping the other will materialize in our rooms.
Keeping track, counting down
the time we've lost
And the time until we trace the veins on the backs
Of each other's paws.
